The thing about Laurie Berkner is she doesn't just play those catchy kids songs. She's so much more. At the age of 50, Laurie Berkner is an entertainment guru for children young and old. She can actually touch her toe to her nose while standing (which, by the way, I couldn't do even on a good day). She can be found balancing a stuffed animal on her head. Or you might find her sleeping. Maybe bouncing a dozen beach balls or perhaps even crowd surfing. Laurie is completely charming and knows exactly how to hypnotize and win the hearts of thousands of children in every single show. One thing is for sure: you'll fall in love with Ms. Laurie Berkner almost immediately.
As “the queen of kids’ music” (People magazine), Laurie Berkner is a singer, songwriter, lyricist, author, and founder of Two Tomatoes Records, LLC. She has released twelve bestselling, award-winning albums, was the first recording artist ever to perform in music videos on Nick Jr., appeared regularly on the network’s Jack’s Big Music Show, and helped develop the short-form animated musical preschool series Sing It, Laurie! on Sprout TV. Laurie’s music videos now appear on Universal Kids’ Sprout House.
Laurie created and performs in a 10-chapter Audible Original Series, Laurie Berkner’s Song & Story Kitchen. She has written the music and lyrics for three Off-Broadway children’s musicals produced by New York City Children’s Theater: Wanda’s Monster, The Amazing Adventures of Harvey and the Princess, and Interstellar Cinderella. Laurie tours nationwide, appearing both solo and with The Laurie Berkner Band. In 2019 alone, to date, she's generated more than 93 million audio and video streams from Amazon, Pandora, Spotify, Apple, and YouTube combined.
Lucky for us, she will be performing this month at College Street Music Hall in New Haven.
She gets kids. With every song, Laurie displays an instinctive understanding of children’s natural rhythms and energy, which keeps kids enraptured and brings parents and caregivers happily along for the ride. Laurie finds inspiration in her audience. “I want to create songs that matter for children,” she says. "When I'm singing with kids, I think I get it. I feel like I'm one of them," she says. "I don't mean that in a cliché way. I mean it in a little bit more of an embarrassing way. I really do have this sense of, "Oh, yeah. That is funny, isn't it? I feel very connected to a 4-year-old."
